A more detailed How-To

The main screen has two states. An edit state and a playback state. You can switch between both states by tapping on the second symbol on the control bar. Symbols always show the function they provide rather than the state.

Edit mode

In the edit mode (the default) you can switch between two editing methods. You can either draw notes in different colors or make selections. Different colors correspond to different sounds and can be selected by tapping on the color buttons. A double click on those buttons opens a Settings Panel. You can switch between drawing and selecting by tapping on the fourth symbol on the control bar. The symbol shows either a straight line, which indicates that you can change to drawing modus, or two squares representing selections. Tapping on the crossed symbol will clear all drawing of the currently selected color, either everything drawn in that color or (in selection mode) the current selection. A double tap on that icon will clear all colors.

You can toggle between tilt controlled cursor and a constant moving cursor by tapping on the third icon. The cursor will adapt the current speed.

Selections can be moved and thrown around. They will also be influenced by the movement of the device.

With the 5th button you can let the drawings of the currently selected color change their pitch randomly after they have been played. The range of the random distribution can be controlled by the tilt of the device. If the device is hold flat, for instance put on a table, then the randomness will spread over the whole range, If the device is tilt on the side the pitches will spread over a smaller range up or down.

Since version 1.1 you can use multiple pages. The current page is indicated by the number in the status bar. To change to another page you can either tap/double tap on the number or swipe up/down with 2 fingers.

Play mode

In play mode you can mute certain colors by tapping on the five round buttons. In this mode you cannot draw or delete anything.

Settings Panel

All panels use a iPhone native user interface, which makes it easy for you to find your way. Most Settings are self-descriptive, but we go through them step by step anyway.

Size: The size of the sequence is defined in pixels. Since the iPhone's screen resolution is 320x420 pixels, the size wheel is a multiple of the screen width.

Friction: Change the friction (or material) on which the cursor moves.

Gravity: Change the gravity, which influences the cursor in tilt mode.

Show Grid: enables a grid to be shown in the main screen. When a grid is visible, the drawings are quantised to the vertical grid, thus in time. This settings enables you to create easily beats and rhythms.

Steps in Grid: The grid can have a grid of 12, 16, 24, 32 or 64 steps and will divide a full screen of 420 pixels.

Delay: Turn the Delay effect on and off. For detailed delay settings you can tap the enclosed button.

Synth Setup: Tap here to select the settings of a specific color. Essentially the same as a double tap on the on the color selection in the main view.

File Panel

Manage your files here. Open and save your compositions in a dedicated file format. Use New to start a clear project. Be careful: your current composition will be eraesed and there's currently no undo. So you might want to save your project first. In the lowest row you can see the address by which you can download and upload audio and project files via wifi. If you don't see any address here, you might not be connected to a local wifi. For security reasons the port number (the last number) changes after each launch of the App.

Delay Effect Settings

Set the delay for left and right channel and the amount the effect is being mixed with the original input. Feedback is the amount of delayed signal which is fed back into the delay.

Synth Settings
Tuning

You can use a scale starting at a certain note (numbers are MIDI note values) or a chromatic tuning within a range of notes. If Apply to existing is turned off, then the settings will only apply to everything drawn from now on. Otherwise everything already drawn will be changed as well.

Synth Type

Currenlty you can choose between a simple sine wave, a sample player and a wavetable player. For the latter two you can change the soundfile being used by tapping on the button, which displays the currently used soundfile. As in the Tuning pane: If Apply to existing is turned off, then the settings will only apply to everything drawn from now on. Otherwise everything already drawn will be changed as well.
